Tha Academy Award goes to Planet Partitioning
The newly built Nailsea School is a high profile project forming part of the 'One School Pathfinder' programme which aims to create benchmark schools and academies with world class facilities for students.
Glazing plays a key role in the design scheme and Planet Partitioning has supplied large quantities to the value of £400k based around their innovaive Vertex dry-jointed product. This includes partitioning, full door sets, windows and atria, all with exceptionally high fire and acoustic ratings.
A prime example is the high-tech control room surrounded by three music studios. Planet produced bespoke windows for each studio with an acoustic rating of 51 dB Rw ensuring there is no discernible sound tranference from students playing instruments or singing. High performance acoustic glazing was also supplied to the impressive school library.
Fire-rated glazing has been used to separate the reception from the large circulation space where students converge and which is flooded with natural light also thanks to Planet who designed and installed the bespoke atria screens to withstand specific high balustrade loading requirements whilst providing excellent acoustic separation.
Throughout the building, striking manifestation in bold colours has been utilised to define different learning spaces and identify staff bases strategically located on each floor.
Planet were involved from start to finish, having been commissioned by Carillion in the early tender stages and successfully brought in the project within the contractor's budget. They also worked closely throughout with project architect, Aedas, based in Bristol.
Built at a cost of around £24m, the two-storey structure has been built alongside the old school which is now in the process of being demolished to make way for playing fields.
